Plummer Terriers, where did they come from? The breed was developed by Dr. D.B. Plummer. A Plummer Terrier is simply a composite of a Jack Russell terrier, Stafordshire Bull terrier, Small American Beagle, and Fell terrier. When Dr. Plummer lived in Rotherham (in Great Britain) he owned a ratting team - The Huddlesford Rat Pack, and although he tells that they were probably the toughest terriers he had ever seen, their scenting ability was not what he wanted. Hence he mated some of his bitches to an American Beagle dog. The result of this mating produced dogs with huge pendulous ears, although they turned out to be good workers and hunters with an excellent scenting ability. But they lost some of their toughness. So he introduced Bull Terrier blood, but this made the dogs too big. Dr. Plummer then introduced Jack Russell and Fell terrier blood to reduce the height and chest size of the dogs and also to improve looks. After a few generations the terriers actually reproduced themselves. Today’s dogs are between 12”-14" tall and approximately 15 to 20 lbs full grown. They are extremely adaptable, stunningly beautiful, intelligent and quick to learn. They make an excellent pet or working dog, |
